My background and life experiences

  • Born and Raised
    • Born and Raised in Kingston. Lived downtown in a diverse neighborhood and attended JFK. Attended Miller Middle School and graduated from Kingston High School in 2000. Grandparents, Parents and Relatives all worked in a variety of trades including Plumbing, Electrical, etc and are all devoted to their families and serve the public whenever possible. 
  • College
    • Attended the State College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse University and received a joint Degree from SUNY ESF and Syracuse in Environmental Science with a concentration in Policy and Management (2004). Went on to work briefly for Syracuse University to manage a National Student Conference for over 3,000 students before returning full time to Kingston in 2005. 
  • Professional Background
    • 1999-2005 - Camp Counselor/Environmental Educator for City of Kingston Parks and Recreation Department during summers while attending High School and College
    • Syracuse University - One Year stint working with Office of Residence Life in nationally recognized Division of Student Affairs to plan national student conference on Leadership
    • City of Kingston 2005 to Present
      • Served at Seasonal Environmental Educator and Stormwater Consultant from 2005-2008. During this time, worked year round for the City in a variety of capacities to bring needed environmental education, environmental policy and efficiency programs, all with little or not impact on the taxpayer
      • 2008-2014 earned full time position (Environmental Educator 1) with a focus on environmental education, recycling, grant writing and stormwater mandates
      • 2014-Present earned promotion with title change (Environmental Program Operations Specialist) which better reflected my greater increasing role in day to day management of the department’s capital projects, other environmentally related projects and additional grant related projects for the City of Kingston
    • Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency 2009-2011
      • Appointed Board Member to the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency, this was a non-compensated position
      • Had oversight of a complex Public Benefit Authority with an annual budget exceeding 14 million
      • Chaired the board for the last year of my three year term. During that time, oversaw the removal and replacement of the agency executive director and the reduction of the annual net service fee charged to Ulster County
    • Hudson River Estuary Management Committee (2010 to Present)
      • Appointed by DEC Commissioner to serve on the Hudson River Estuary Management Committee
      • Oversees policy, planning and management of DEC Estuary Program covering the Hudson River Valley
    • Kingston Land Trust, Inc
      • Co founder and long time board member, was serving role of vice chair (currently on a leave of absence)
      • Open Space Preservation organization focused on improving Kingston’s greenspaces
      • Worked with fellow board and committee members to launch the Kingston Greenline Project, undertook multiple open space acquisition projects  in and around the Kingston area while also actively working on large projects like AVR’s Hudson River Landing project.
    • Ulster County Environmental Management Council
      • Appointed by Ulster County Legislature, long time member and has served as Chair, since 2009.
      • Advises the County Legislature, Executive and Department of the Environment on countywide environmental issues.
  • Friends of Forsyth Nature Center, Former Board Member
    • Currently advises group when needed on a variety of issues related to organization, website, and previous actives while serving as board member
  • New York State Association of Conservation Commissions
    • Longtime board member (16+ years), currently serving as an At-Large Board Member for NYS Region 3.

    • Developed After-school program at Everette Hodge Community Center 
    • Developed and assisted in implementation of new composting toliets in City Parks
    • Developed Safe Routes to School Infrastructure Project near Edson and JFK and George Washington Schools
    • Awarded grants for Forsyth Park Improvements, Fishing Dock, Uptown Parking Lots
    • Developed Kingston Report It Smartphone App
    • Worked with Friends of Historic Kingston to create Kingston Clean Sweep
    • Assisted in Creating of Climate Action Plan and Recreation Master Plan
    • Developed “Pay as you throw” for not for profit organizations in Kingston
    • Installed Bike Racks and Solar Powered Compacting Trash Can’s (Mr. Big Belly) in three locations in midtown
    • Helped support creating and played integral role in 4 Year Healthy Kingston for Kids Initiative to reduce childhood obesity 
    • Assisted in the transition of Healthy Kids to a new LiveWell Kingston coalition and currently serves on Leadership Team and chairs the Play Well Focus Group

About Us

Steve was born and raised in Kingston, coming from a working class background, Steve has always lived his life with the guiding principles that with hard work, determination, honesty, respect and kindness you can do positive things for your community.

Steve has served the City of Kingston for 10 years and is now ready to take on a larger leadership role to guide the city for the next four years. Steve is married to his wife of 10 years, Julie, and has an energetic four year old son, Matthew.
